As a significant storm made its way into the region on Saturday, promising to bring up to 10 inches of snow in parts of Massachusetts, Boston Mayor Tom Menino announced a snow emergency. Storm warnings and advisories have been posted for much of Massachusetts by the National Weather Service. A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for most of eastern Massachusetts. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the remainder of Massachusetts, including the Cape and Islands. The latest computer model guidance indicates a general area of 4 to 8 inches of snow across much of eastern and central Massachusetts. Coastal areas of Massachusetts and New Hampshire, including Cape Cod will see mostly rain, with a quick changeover to snow at the end of the storm. On Saturday afternoon, Boston Mayor Tom Menino announced a snow emergency and parking ban for the city which would go into effect at 9 p.m. “With up to 8 inches of snow expected in parts of the city, and freezing temperatures forecast for the next week, it's extremely important we get our roadways cleared as soon as possible in the interest of public safety," Menino said. "We want everyone to enjoy the holiday weekend in our city, but we're urging an abundance of caution for all. Menino said in light of the holiday, Boston Department of Public Works crews would be working throughout the weekend and were well prepared for the storm. Approximately 200 pieces of equipment were expected to start clearing city streets by 6 p.m.
