National electricity utility Eskom warned on Thursday that it was experiencing nation-wide power outages because of generating unit outages, including a shutdown of its nuclear power station Koeberg's Unit 1 early on Thursday morning. It said that this electricity shortfall could affect the whole country, with the situation expected to remain critical for the coming week. “Eskom is experiencing unplanned outages of 4 600 MW owing to technical generating plant problems,” Eskom Transmission MD Jacob Maroga said in an emailed statement. “This is 3 000 MW higher than was anticipated for this period. The electricity demand is 1 000 MW higher than planned.” A spokesperson for Eskom, Moses Mamba told Engineering News Online that the company expected Koeberg unit 1 to be operating at full capacity “sometime next week”. He said that, at this stage, he was not able to confirm or comment on a resulting loadshedding schedule. The automatic shutdown of Koeberg unit 1 was due to a trip of the turbine. The reactor is in a safe shutdown condition, and the cause of the turbine trip was being investigated, Eskom said
