Event Description

Flood in Nigeria on Thursday, 01 September, 2011 at 01:22 (01:22 AM) UTC.

The country's Red Cross is reporting that flash floods in the last week across that nation's southwest have killed at least 102 people and left 15-hundred displaced. According to Umar Mairiga, an official with the Nigerian Red Cross the major flood hit hardest in Oyo state's capital of Ibadan where heavy rains made a local dam to overflow, sending water crashing through the informal settlements surrounding the city. Many homes there were poorly constructed, meaning they simply washed away when the water rushed through.
Last year, some 500-thousand people were displaced nationwide by floods in Nigeria.
