A leaking pipe caused the evacuation of around 500 people from the Paarden Eiland Flea Market in Cape Town on Saturday, the city's disaster management centre said. "At 9.20am the Disaster Risk Management Centre was informed by traders at the Paarden Eiland Flea Market concerning a chemical substance that has covered the parking area," said spokesman Wilfred Solomons-Johannes in a statement. "The emergency crews from the Fire & Rescue Services and the Disaster Risk Management Centre were dispatched to the scene to investigate the incident." Upon arrival they found the substances coming through a maintenance manhole came from the Chevron pipeline transferring diesel from the Port of Cape Town to its refinery in Milnerton. Chevron were informed and dispatched crews to deal with the leak. The pipeline was isolated stop any further environmental damage and health impact in the surrounding area. The city issued a directive to Chevron to do emergency repairs on the pipeline without delay in terms of the National Environmental Management Act. "The area has been closed off to the general public and excavation is in progress in order to establish the cause of the pipe leak and to effect repairs under strict security provisions," said Solomons-Johannes. The city would monitor the situation until it was resolved.
