A lightning-caused fire approximately 13 miles north of Ovando on the Seeley Lake Ranger District. This fire is burning in steep terrain and heavy timber in a remote area about two miles south of the Scapegoat Wilderness boundary. The fire became active yesterday (8/19) and produced a smoke column visible from highway 200 and Ovando. Smokejumpers were dispatched to the fire late Saturday but were pulled off the fire yesterday when conditions became unsafe and fire activity increased near the helicopter pick-up zone. Active spotting was also observed yesterday. Fire managers are meeting today to discuss a long-term strategy for managing the fire. No structures or property are threatened by the fire. The fire is expected to become active again today and smoke is again expected to be visible from Highway 200 and Ovando. Fire managers will meet members of the community this evening at 6 P.M. outside the Ovando store to discuss fire operations and long-term strategies.
