A large scrub fire which threatened homes in a suburb south of Dunedin today has now been successfully contained. Locals alerted fire and police to the fire near the beach in the suburb of Ocean View around 3pm. Ten appliances and two helicopters raced to the scene as flames stretched three hundred metres long and thirty metres wide. Police evacuated residents from six nearby homes. Local resident Michelle Ferris says the fire began in sand dunes in front of her home and the homes of her neighbours. She says fire fighters worked extremely hard to douse the flames. The Fire Service says the flames came to within twenty metres of the homes before crews managed to contain it. Residents have now been allowed back into their homes.
