Crews are water-bombing a bushfire at George Town in northern Tasmania that has sparked a Watch and Act warning for nearby residents. The Tasmania Fire Service issued the Watch and Act alert at 3.06pm, saying the fire may put George Town, North George Town, Tip Rd and Alfred St at high risk now. The alert says: There may be embers, smoke and ash falling on George Town, North George Town, Tip Road and Alfred Street and threaten your home earlier than the main fire. Fire under these conditions can be difficult to control. Numerous tankers and a water-bombing helicopter are being used to fight the fire. "Keep well clear as the falling water has the potential to cause injury to anyone in the drop zone," the Tasmania Fire Service website said of efforts to control the fire in Main Rd. Tasmania Police advise Main Rd at George Town between Bell Bay Rd and Victoria St has been closed due to a fire in the area. Police are conducting traffic control duties in the area as visibility is reduced due to smoke.
