Six helicopters are at the scene of a forest fire in Marlborough, with another four helicopters on standby. The blaze started this afternoon in a commercial pine forest plantation to the south of the Wairau Valley township, the Marlborough District Council said. The fire has burned through about 60 hectares of pine forest belonging to Nelson Forests. Forestry fire crews from around the region have been called in to help. The fire is burning over steep terrain and it is likely to take at least four days to get it under control, incident controller John Foley said. It came just two weeks after a large pine plantation fire in Marlborough's Waikakaho Valley, which also began in an area where forestry production was underway.
