Two trains collided on Monday afternoon between Tembisa and Kaalfontein, resulting in one fatality and between 100 and 150 injuries. The trains collided on the rail split from Kaalfontein Station towards Oakmoor and Tembisa stations in Esselen Park. According to EMER-G-MED paramedics, one person was declared dead on the scene and is still trapped inside the wreckage of the trains. Netcare 911's Chris Botha said that over 100 people have been injured and that at least 50 are serious injuries. Botha estimated that it would take at least a day to clear the crash site. The East Rand train route is one of the busiest in Gauteng and carries thousands of commuters travelling between Ekurhuleni, Tshwane and Johannesburg daily.
