An animal hospital in Levy County is putting out a "heads up" to people about a common and deadly disease for dogs and humans. Doctors at the Trenton Animal Hospital say that Leptospirosis, which can be transmitted from dogs to humans, is more common in summer months. The bacteria is commonly found in hotter climates and can be contracted by dogs from drinking standing water. There are preventative methods for dogs such as vaccinations. There is also a very high success rate of dogs treated once infected. However, it's relatively easy for the disease to pass on to humans. "In those animals that harbor the infection, it lives in their urinary tract. And coming in contact with their urine or areas that they have urinated is the most common way that it is transmitted to people", said Dr. Thomas Hester of the Trenton Animal hospital. Leptospirosis is the most common disease spread from animals to people in the world. If left untreated, it can cause kidney and liver failure as well as blood disorders.
