A surfer has been attacked by a shark near a beach in Southland. A St John Ambulance spokesman confirmed an attack had taken place in the Catlins about 2pm. The spokesman said ambulance were responding to the incident, but the nature and severity of the attack was still unknown at this stage. A police spokesman said the attack took place at Curio Bay, and that police were attending the scene along with ambulance staff. Otago Rescue Helicopter Trust pilot Kevin Gale said a crew was en route to a call out in Southland. "We're heading to the job now but we haven't even landed yet so we don't know what to expect." He said no further information was available at this stage.
